Three-time winner of the Professional Flute Choir Competition of the National Flute Association, Cathleen Arhelger performed in that group in New York City (2009), Albuquerque (2007), and Pittsburgh (2006). She is currently first chair of Southeast Minnesota Chamber Orchestra (Albert Lea, Minnesota). She released her second solo album: Rejoice! A Treasury of Christmas Carols for Flute and Piano in 2007. It features original arrangements of traditional carols on piccolo, alto flute, as well as C flute.

For eight years she performed in the Rochester (Minnesota) Symphony Orchestra (1981-89). Her freelance duo with violin is called Windwood Duo. That group plays at weddings and special events.

An enthusiastic teacher, Cathleen has taught hundreds of young people to play the flute at her private studio: Cathy Arhelger Flute Studio. She started her studio in 1981. Several of her students go on to major in music at various colleges, universities and conservatories.

Cathleen began the flute in the sixth grade band in the Detroit area. She received her Bachelor of Music degree from Wayne State University (Detroit, Michigan). Her flute instructors include Linda Chatterton, Emil Niosi, Clement Barone and Joanne Peters.

This treasury of carols reflects our rich heritage of music for Christmastime: from a work by J.S. Bach to a stirring African-American spiritual; from 15th-century European melodies to a modern one from 20th-century America. There are introspective lullabies, as well as joyful folk tune. While some of these pieces may be less familiar, all of them were chosen to reflect the true meaning of this joyful season.

Review from James Galway

Dear Cathleen,

Your record is just great and you play all flutes very well in deed. I specially enjoyed your tone on the regular flute in the low notes. The arrangements are great and the whole thing was very well put together. I just loved the recording. Sir James,
At Home,
Switzerland.
